Want to explore one of your interests and improve your college résumé at the same time? Start your own club at Barrington High School.

Junior Jacqui Sholes and Freshman Justin Sholes developed plans for the new History Club over the summer. Founded in November their club already has 21 members.

“We decided to bring a history club to the school where people who are passionate about history can come!” exclaims Jacqui.

Sholes feels that participating in school clubs improves your competitiveness as an aspiring college applicant. Taking initiative like this demonstrates a student’s willingness to work hard and accomplish difficult tasks. It also takes a lot of work and planning.

“When the founders of this club approached me, they had a clear and organized plan, enthusiasm, drive, passion---I was convinced!” says history teacher and club advisor Mrs. Tracy Miller.

Beyond all the pre-planning and organization, developing your own club provides a unique way to interact with your peers who share the same interest.

“Engaging with others is essential to a school club and commitment looks great when applying to colleges,” says Junior Malia Villella, vice president of the new History Club says.

Mr. George Finn, the school’s director of athletics and student activities, encourages students to pursue their unique interests.

“There’s so many different opportunities,” Mr. Finn says, “BHS clubs have done so many positive things over the years.”

Mr. Finn outlined these steps for creating your own club.

  1. Create your idea

  2. Gain student interest

  3. Draft a Summary and Constitution

  4. Present it to Principal Joseph Hurley

  5. Have your request go through Student Council

  6. Have it reviewed by Mr. Finn

  7. Have your request go through the school administration for review

  8. Clean up your Constitution and finalize your club.

“It’s more about quality than quantity,” Mr. Finn advises.
